Joyce Adamtey
The Western Region Police Command has arrested the women’s organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Bopp, in the Mpohor District, for allegedly using NPP’s name to defraud job seekers into the security services.
Reports say the suspect, Joyce Adamtey, 35, was said to be going round extorting mony from job seekers with full assurance of handling over brown envelopes to some NPP executives to facilitate the process on their behalf.
She was also said to be posting pictures of NPP gurus online to convince victims of her connections in the ruling party.
Further checks showed that Madam Adamtey connived with another NDC executive domiciled in Kumasi to engage in this fraudulent business.
Fraudulent act
According to reports, when victims contacted the Mpohor NPP constituency chairman for further details, after parting with GH₵7,000 to be enlisted in the Prison Service, it was revealed that the victim was also one of her own party members and a lotto operator.
Throwing more light on the issue, the Mpohor constituency chairman of the NPP, Chairman Razak, told journalists that he received phone call from an unknown person on December 31, last year, demanding additional details on his recruitment into the Prison Service after doing “the needful”.
He indicated he did not understand what the caller meant by “doing the needful”, and asked him for further explanations.
According to Chairman Razak, the caller then narrated how Joyce took GH₵5,000 from him to be [supposedly] handed over to him in a bid to secure him a job in the Prison Service.
“The caller said Joyce came back collecting another GH₵2,000 as my lorry fair to Accra in order to see the ‘big men’ in charge of the recruitment exercise. I thought the caller’s story was kind of a joke and therefore ignored it,” he explained.
He added that the caller called back last week narrating the same story, and even showed him one of his (Chairman Razak)own pictures posted online by the NDC women’s organiser as evidence.
“I got alarmed and reported the case to the police, leading to her arrest. Indeed, there are rumours that other job seekers in the constituency had been dubbed by the NDC women’s organiser. All of such people should report to the police,” he urged.
He, however, reminded the youth, particularly those interested in the security services, to follow the laid down procedure for enlistment without resorting to the payment of money to some “unscrupulous and shameless” individuals.
Meanwhile, the police is conducting thorough investigations to arraign Joyce Adamtey before the law court.
