Thousands of members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bantama constituency, on Sunday, December 24, 2023, accompanied the incumbent Member of Parliament, Francis Asenso-Boakye, to file his nomination forms for re-election in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary primaries.
The enthusiastic crowd, which included party delegates, witnessed a surprising presence of some members affiliated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who were observed cheering on him.
After submitting his nomination forms at the Ashanti Regional NPP Headquarters, Mr. Asenso-Boakye expressed optimism about receiving unprecedented endorsement from Bantama delegates during the primaries.
Potential competition
When asked about potential competition, he dismissed any concerns, stating, “It is like a choice between Pragia (Tricycle) and a VIP Bus. I know I would beat him hands down if we vote today or tomorrow.”
Addressing rumors of a contender challenging him, Mr. Asenso-Boakye questioned the qualification of the opponent, asserting that the contender does not meet the party’s constitutional requirements for candidacy in Bantama.
He indicated that despite the potential challenge, he is focused and dedicated to the welfare of the constituents.
The incumbent MP also underscored his opponent’s lack of preparedness, stating, “It means that he does not have the capacity to help; it means that he doesn’t have the heart to serve the people of Bantama.”
Track record
He highlighted the significance of his own track record in delivering tangible development to the constituency.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye stated that his performance over the past three years had surpassed that of any Member of Parliament since 1992.
He cited accomplishments such as the construction of AstroTurf football pitches, health facilities, police stations, schools, and libraries, as well as various educational and vocational initiatives benefiting the local community.
He further urged the people of Bantama to rally behind him to continue development within the constituency.
