A group calling itself Democratic Forum has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to relieve the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sara Adwoa Safo, of her position. According to the group, the continuous rejection of post by the minister, and her apparent disregard for the many people she represents suggest that she is not ready to serve her country, and therefore should not be allowed to continue to feed on the poor taxpayer’s public money.
New nomination
A petition signed by Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Executive Director of Democratic Forum, asked President Akufo-Addo to, as a matter of importance, replace the Gender Minister with a more focused person who is ready to work in the interest of the country and lead the ministry to attain its set-out vision.
The absence of Ms Safo from parliamentary duties and ministerial assignments has been of public concern for some months now. The Dome Kwabenya legislator has been out of the country since December 2021. She has missed her parliamentary duties since the beginning of 2022 as well as abandoned her duty as the Gender Minister.
In her recent public appearance, the Minister indicated that she had had to excuse herself from duty in order to take care of her ailing child. Parliament’s Privileges Committee was recently petitioned about her absence from the legislative house, a petition the committee is looking into.
The Democratic forum, however, believes that leadership at the Gender Ministry must not be in a vacuum on account of her absence from work.
